Creating a Release & Adding Milestones in QLM

Release managers ensure that the release of an upcoming software version is successful and is ready for use by end users. Opkey's Release feature helps plan and track the progress of software's upcoming releases.

Whether it's a major release with new features or routine bug fixes and performance enhancements, you can centralize all requirements, tickets, bugs, and issues discovered during manual or automated testing.

Additionally, you can set milestones for different phases in a release, which may include tasks, features, and bug fixes for a particular release.

For instance, for a quarterly software release, you can break down the process into monthly milestones, like development, testing, and feature updates. This way, you can efficiently accomplish tasks in each milestone step by step and track their progress for the quarter.

Let's understand how to create a release and add milestones to it in QLM.

Creating a New Release:

To create a release, navigate to the Release section in QLM and click the + Release button.

A Create Release panel opens on the right where you can enter the details such as:

Release Name - Enter a name for your release

ApplicationChoose the application for which the release is scheduled

Version - Choose a version of the product

Start and End Date - Provide a start and end date for your release

Release Type - Select whether it involves a platform update, patch, or setup

Status - Select the status of the release: Not Started, Completed, On Hold, In Progress, or Cancelled

Description - Enter the description of the tasks to be accomplished in the release

You can also attach files related to a release, like images, Excel sheets, videos, etc. Once you have entered all the details, click Create. The release gets created, and you can access it in the Release section of QLM.

Milestone

You can further divide a release into milestones, which include subtasks your team needs to achieve within a set timeframe. You can add multiple milestones to a release.

Adding a Milestone:

To add a milestone to a release, open a release, and click Add Milestone. A page opens on the right where you can enter the following details.

Milestone Name - Give a name to the milestone.

Application - Choose the application you want to work on

Version - Select the version

Start and End Date - Select its Start and End Date

Milestone Type - Select an option from the dropdown Platform Update, Patch, Setup, or None

Status - Choose from the given options, Completed, On Hold, In Progress, or Cancelled.

Description - Enter the description of the tasks to be accomplished in the milestone.

Once done, click the Create button at the bottom.

Your milestone is ready. The milestones can have all the tasks and subtasks, such as tickets, test suites, and user stories for a project. You can also link test suites, tickets, test runs, and test cases with milestones to simplify progress tracking.
